Bosley HairDX is a new genetic test that predicts and allows men to better understand their risk for male pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia).  This test also isolates potential causes for certain types of hair loss in women.

Bosley HairDX Genetic Test

The HairDX genetic test will benefit men ages 18-40 and women with hair loss, though the test has targeted men and women of all ages.

Bosley HairDX, the first test of its kind, is due to be released mid-November 2008 and is conducted in a Bosley office by a Bosley clinical staff member or physician.  Bosley  surgical offices are located throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.  However, the Hair DX test is not currently available in Mexico. 

While at a Bosley office, the genetic test is taken by swabbing the inside of the cheek for several seconds.  The swab is then sent to the Hair DX Labs where the genetic analysis is performed by a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified laboratory.  CLIA  is the highest quality laboratory certification available.

In men, the Bosley HairDX test effectively identifies the presence or absence of an androgenic receptor gene.  The presence of this gene will indicate a 60% chance of going bald by the age of 40 while the absence of the gene provides an 85% chance of not going bald by the age of 40.

The Bosley HairDX test provides women with a CAG test score, which helps analyze the risk of developing female pattern hair loss.  A smaller CAG score indicates a greater likelihood of significant hair loss as defined in the Ludwig Scale grade II or III.  A larger CAG score indicates a low occurrence and risk of hair loss.  The test is extremely accurate.  Only 2.3% of women who tested with CAG scores of 15 or lower did not develop female pattern hair loss.

The Bosley HairDX test provides an advantage to customers in that it effectively predicts the risk of hair loss in men and women.  With this information, which is kept confidential and anonymous, the customer is empowered  to explore solutions and better manage their hair loss.

An example for men would be the use of Propecia, which is a prescription drug for men only.  Propecia helps to reduce the formation of DHT (dihydrotesterone), the primary cause of male pattern hair loss in men.  The reduction of DHT helps men to keep the hair they have.  The advance notice provided by the Bosley HairDX genetic test could provide enough genetic predisposition information to explore this option before hair loss becomes too advanced.  Most people don’t notice their hair is thinning until approximately 50% of it is already gone.
