Seth Garon, age 35 of Portland, Oregon noticed his hair was thinning when he cut it short for a new position as a creative director for an advertising agency.  It was at that time he decided to schedule a free consultation and meet with a Bosley Senior Counselor. During this consultation Seth learned more about the causes of hair loss and available options to stop balding.  He knew if he didn’t take action he was on a certain path to look like his father and grandfather.

In this segment Dr. Winans of the Bosley Seattle office, is preparing the recipient sites for Seth’s hairline.

In our previous segment Seth received local anesthesia as well as medication to help him relax as he prepares for his hair restoration.  In the following segment of our multi-part video series, Dr. Winans prepares the recipient sites where Seth’s grafts will eventually be placed.  

The recipient sites are done by hand at varying depth and angle with random placement.  The artistry used in creating the recipient sites is required to make a completely natural looking hairline.

While Dr. Winans is creating the recipient sites (tiny incisions) the surgical team is separating the follicular units, which will be placed in the recipient sites.  The surgical team is trained and retrained extensively on the handling of grafts to ensure their healthy growth.

Follicular units contain groupings of 1-4 hairs.  These groupings will be placed with smaller finer groupings in the front and thicker, larger groupings toward the back just like nature had intended.

donor strip.  The donor strip is taken from the back and side of the head because the follicles in these areas are resistant to the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the primary cause of hair loss in men.  When these DHT resistant follicular units are transplanted they will continue to grow forever.

In part 8 of our series documenting Seth’s experience with Bosley permanent hair restoration, Dr. Winans is creating the donor area.

The donor area contains the follicular units that will be transplanted to the three regions of Seth’s thinning areas recently described by Dr. Winans as the front, top and back.  The donor area is on the sides and back of the head where the follicles are resistant to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), the hormone primarily responsible for male pattern hair loss.

After these DHT resistant follicular units are transplanted, they will continue to grow without the effects the DHT has had on Seth’s native hair.  However, Seth’s native hair that remains will still be susceptible to the effects of this hormone.

In the final segment of Seth’s initial consultation with Dr. Winans, Propecia is discussed.  Propecia is a prescription drug for men only that helps reduce the formation of DHT.  Propecia has been recommended by Dr. Winans for Seth as part of his treatment plan to help him keep his remaining native hair and therefore have greater fullness.

In this segment of the Bosley video series, the surgical staff has done some of the initial preparation for Seth’s procedure, which will take anywhere from 1/2 to 1 full day.  A full day procedure typically ends with a late afternoon departure.

Dr. Winans is in the process of taking pictures of Seth’s head from multiple angles prior to the procedure.

In this latest segment in our series on Seth’s experience with Bosley and permanent hair restoration, Seth gets further acquainted with the surgical staff and is quite comfortable.

We’ve learned from previous segments that Seth was formerly in a rock band and quite proud of his hair but that all began to change as he aged.  He’s now 35 and considered a class 5a on the Norwood Scale, a scale used to display the progression of male pattern hair loss.

In Seth’s recent consultation with Dr. Winans, it was determined that Seth’s scalp mobility was good as was his donor hair.  

The preparation by the surgical staff for Seth’s procedure in the following videos has begun.  Seth will be at the Bosley office in Seattle for the majority of the day.  The typical hair transplantation procedure lasts 1/2 to 1 full day with a late afternoon departure for the full day.

Dr. Winans mentioned in an earlier segment that he recommends a range of grafts for Seth of 1100-1300. The typical hair transplantation procedure can take 1/2 to 1 full day.  This would be an early morning start and a late afternoon departure for the full day.  Seth’s procedure will likely fall somewhere in the middle.

In this segment, one of the surgical staff is getting Seth ready for the day.  He’s already brought along a good book and has access to email through his phone but the staff also makes movies and other reading material available should he want something different.  They also take a lunch order for Seth and get him further acquainted with the facilities.
