Bosley Hair Transplantation
Bosley Hair Transplantation includes the FUT and new Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures.
The Follicular Unit Extraction technique is the most recent advancement in hair transplantation. With this technique, the Bosley physician removes individual follicular units of 1-3 hairs from the donor area instead of a complete donor strip.
The FUE technique is different from the traditional FUT procedure in that the FUE extracts with a tiny one millimeter in diameter instrument and transplants individual follicular units while the FUT microscopically dissects units from a donor strip. The removal of a donor strip in the FUT procedure typically results in a thin, fine scar that is easily covered by the remaining hair.
In men, donor hair comes from the sides and back of the head as these hairs and follicles are resistant to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the primary cause of male-pattern hair loss where hair thins around the crown and temples of the head. When transplanted, the donor hair retains its DHT resistance and essentially continues to grow forever where genetically sensitive hair failed.
The typical candidate for the Bosley’s FUE procedure will:
- Be interested in a relatively small procedure that involves 1,000 grafts or less
- Have a limited supply of donor hair
- Have limited elasticity of the scalp
- Have limited donor hair supply and scalp elasticity after multiple FUT procedures
- Need or prefer to wear their hair very short
- Not be concerned with the close clipping involved in the donor area at the time of the procedure

In 1997 Propecia® (finasteride) was approved by the FDA for the treatment of male-pattern baldness. Propecia® is a drug prescribed to men only that must be taken on a daily basis to maintain results. Propecia® can help you keep the hair you have but it will not bring back hair you’ve already lost.
