In men, the primary cause of hair loss is the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  DHT slowly causes hair to thin, eventually falling out and resulting in male-pattern baldness.  This pattern typically occurs around the temples and crown of the head.

Hair loss is a genetic trait with the genes being passed down from both sides of the family, affecting hair loss in men and women.

You’ve probably noticed that men with male-pattern hair loss retain the hair on the sides and back of the head.  These hairs and follicles are resistant to the hormone DHT.  In permanent hair restoration,  DHT resistant hair and follicles are transplanted to thinning or bald areas.  When transplanted they retain their DHT resistance and essentially continue to grow forever where genetically sensitive hair failed.

The stages of male-pattern hair loss are illustrated by the Norwood Scale and include classes 2-6.

Women’s hair loss can also be attributed to DHT, often occurring at the time of menopause when estrogen levels drop and no longer counter the effects of DHT.

Women lose their hair in a different pattern than men typically thinning throughout the scalp.  The stages of women’s hair loss are illustrated by the Ludwig Scale and include classes 1-3.

The only permanent solution to hair loss is surgical hair restoration.  Other FDA approved or accepted hair loss treatments could be part of your complete treatment plan as decided by you and your Bosley physician.

Hairline Magnifier

Bosley physicians have a minimum of 10 years surgical experience and have been thoroughly trained in the art of hair restoration.  Bosley patient results can be seen in the interactive gallery.  Interactive tools include the Hair Restorer Photobooth, Hairline Magnifier, Before and After Slider, Video Gallery, Eyebrow Restoration information and even a section to email questions to Bosley patients.

The procedure is remarkably simple, done on an outpatient basis and typically takes 3/4 to one full day to complete.  Given local anesthesia is used, Bosley patients often read, listen to music, watch movies and even sleep during the procedure.
