Propecia® is a prescription drug for men only.  Scientists have discovered that one of the principle reasons for male pattern hair loss is a hormone called DHT (dihydrotesterone). Propecia® effectively inhibits the formation of DHT. Most men will see a slowing or cessation of hair loss on the top of the head and scalp.

This is a slow process where you must dedicate at least 12 months to see results. Merck has stated that Propecia® must be taken consistently or any hair grown or maintained will be lost within 12 months.

The most common treatment for male-pattern baldness has been a topical solution called Minoxidil, which was approved in 1988 by the FDA. Minoxidil has been proven in some cases to slow down or help stop hair loss on the vertex of the head.
