You’ve probably noticed in men that the hair on the sides and back of the head remains even when bald or thinning on top.  The hair and follicles in these areas are resistant to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the primary cause of male-pattern hair loss.

It is these hair and follicles that are used as “donor hair” in permanent hair restoration.  When transplanted they retain their resistance to DHT and essentially continue to grow forever where genetically sensitive hair failed.
