In men, donor hair comes from the sides and back of the head.  It is these hairs and follicles that are resistant to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the primary cause of male-pattern hair loss.  When transplanted to thinning or bald areas, this resistance is maintained allowing the transplanted hair to essentially grow forever where genetically sensitive hair failed.
