In men, donor hair comes from the sides and back of the head where the follicles and hair are resistant to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  DHT is the primary cause of male-pattern hair loss where the hair thins at the temples and crown of the head.  When transplanted the donor hair retains its resistance to DHT and will essentially continue to grow forever where genetically sensitive hair failed.
