Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation > Bosley Medical News

Permanent hair restoration has gained significant popularity among men, women and celebrities due in large part to follicular unit hair transplantation technology. This new technology allows the grafts to be smaller, which in turn creates perfectly natural looking results and virtually undetectable hairlines.
Decades ago when hair restoration was in its infancy, a concept called “donor dominance” was used. ”Hair plugs” were used first but they were primitive and unsatisfactory. These were actually skin grafts (scalp tissue), that were transplanted. The results from this procedure received the derogatory labels doll’s hair, hair tufts and corn row hair.
Improvements came in the 1980’s and 90’s, which led to today’s modern hair transplantation of follicle-based grafts. This procedure, known as follicular unit hair transplantation, is the gold standard and results in more natural-looking hairlines.
Bosley permanent hair restoration (follicular unit hair transplantation) involves taking hair from the sides and back of the head, where you have more than you need, and moving it to thinning or bald areas.
In men, the hair on the top and front of the head is sensitive to the hormone (DHT). You’ve probably noticed that many men retain the hair on the sides and back of the head. This is because the hair and follicles in these areas are resistant to DHT, ergo their use in permanent hair restoration. When these hair and follicles are transplanted, they retain their resistance and will continue to grow without any impact from DHT.
Women also elect to have hair restoration. In fact, data released by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS) shows that 9 in 10 women in their thirties would be very concerned about losing their hair, while a similar percentage (88%) would be concerned if they were at the beginning of their career and were experiencing noticeable hair loss.
Though many associate hair restoration with men, new statistics show that permanent hair restoration procedures for women have risen to almost 14% of patients in 2006.
The Bosley Patient Gallery includes pictures of men and women with varying degrees of initial hair loss and their results after permanent hair restoration.
