Bosley > Hair Loss Classifications

The Norwood Scale is a chart that illustrates how male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) typically advances.  This chart is used by a Bosley physician to diagnose your balding to thinning pattern.

You can use this chart to find a classification you believe resembles your current stage of hair loss.  The Bosley patient gallery displays a range of patients with initial hair loss of classes 2-6 and their results after permanent hair restoration.

Permanent Hair Restoration

Bosley permanent hair restoration is a simple outpatient procedure that is the only permanent solution to hair loss.  This procedure involves taking hair from the back and sides of the head, which is where you have more than you need, and moving it to thin, balding areas.  These “recipient areas” are at the front and top of the head where men experience male pattern hair loss.

Male pattern hair loss is attributed to the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone).  This hormone causes hair follicles to slowly close, thinning hair to the point that it eventually falls out and results in hair loss.  In men, hair and follicles at the sides and back of the head are resistant to the effects of this hormone.  When transplanted to thinning areas, these follicles maintain this resistance and thrive where genetically sensitive hair failed.

In addition to your permanent hair restoration, your Bosley physician may recommend other solutions as part of a complete treatment plan.

Propecia® helps inhibit the formation of DHT and works well for those in the earliest stages of hair loss. However, only 5% of men already dissatisfied with their appearance will find Propecia® to be a satisfactory solution by itself.

The Bosley LaserComb is the first and only FDA approved medical device for hair growth. The Bosley LaserComb is clinically proven to promote hair growth, grow stronger hair, inhibit hair loss and increase blood flow in the scalp.

The Bosley LaserComb uses a process called photo-biostimulation.  This process delivers laser energy to hair follicles, which may increase blood flow and improve circulation in the scalp.  Increasing blood flow in the scalp helps to deliver vital nutrients as well as effectively remove waste products.
