CBS46, WGCL TV Atlanta, features an article on real hair loss solutions and has questions answered by Ken Washenik, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Director of Bosley.
Dr. Washenik stated ”With America’s fixation on youth and looks, it’s no wonder that the onset of hair loss can send men into a panic,” and added ”While losing your hair is not life-threatening, it can trigger powerful emotions.”
Male pattern baldness (androgenitic alopecia) is primarily caused by a sensitivity to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Nearly forty percent of men have noticeable hair loss by age 35. That number increases appreciably with age. Nearly 65% of men have noticeable hair loss by age 60.
But there are hair loss treatment options from topical minoxidil and Propecia® to Bosley’s new LaserComb®.
Propecia® is a prescription drug for men only that effectively inhibits the formation of DHT. Most men will see a slowing or cessation of hair loss on the top of the head and scalp.
The Bosley LaserComb® has been developed with nine individual laser beams that emit just enough energy to stimulate hair follicles and promote regrowth. This solution can be used in pre-operative and post-operative patients to obtain the best results after hair restoration surgery.
The most common treatment for male-pattern baldness has been a topical solution called Minoxidil, which was approved in 1988 by the FDA. Minoxidil has been proven in some cases to slow down or help stop hair loss on the vertex of the head. This has only been effective in some cases and has demonstrated little effect on frontal hair loss where most men have the greatest concern. Frontal hair loss is the hair line or temples where many men begin to recede.
Minoxidil can only be effective if taken on a daily basis. Any results gained from the use of Minoxidil will be lost if daily treatment stops.
Bosley offers a permanent hair restoration solution, ”It is a safe, in-office medical procedure that redistributes healthy hair follicles from non-thinning areas at the sides and very back of the head, where you have more than you need, to the thinning or balding areas on top,” explains Dr. Washenik.
