Hair Replacement Surgery > Bosley Medical

Hair restoration is the only permanent solution to hair loss.  There are other FDA approved or accepted treatment options for hair loss including Propecia®, Minoxidil and the latest innovation, the Bosley LaserComb. Read more on these other treatment options and how they may be helpful as part of a larger hair loss treatment plan.

The primary cause of hair loss in men is the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  DHT typically affects hair on the top and front of the head.  Hair on the sides and back are more resistant to the hormone.  It is these DHT resistant follicles that are used in permanent hair restoration.  The hairs and follicles from this “donor area” are artfully moved to the thinning areas at the top and front of the head.  The hair follicle itself is resistant to the hormone DHT, so even when moved, it will retain this resistance and thrive where DHT sensitive follicles failed.

Hair transplantation is a remarkably simple, outpatient procedure.  A snapshot of a typical patient’s day is broken down into 5 steps.

The first step is the procedure plan where the patient meets with the Bosley physician and confirms specific goals and plan.

After the procedure plan is confirmed with the doctor, the patient receives local anesthetic at the sides and back of the head.  This is where the donor strip is removed.  Next, the donor area is sutured by the doctor, which usually leaves a very thin, fine scar that is easily concealed by the remaining hair.

After removal of the donor strip, the surgical staff begins dividing the follicular units, which are in groupings of 1-4 hairs.  Later, these follicular units will be skillfully placed in the recipient sites.

While the skilled surgical staff continues to separate the follicular units, the patient is given local anesthetic in the recipient area.  This is where the grafts will be placed.  The doctor creates each recipient site by hand with specific depth, location and angle.  Grafts are placed in a random fashion, which mimics nature’s own placement.  Thinner, smaller groupings are placed in the front and larger, thicker groupings are placed toward the back.  A perfectly natural looking hairline is created with this skill and artistry.
