The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved or accepted several treatments for hair loss. The only permanent solution to hair loss is permanent hair restoration.
The most common treatment for hair loss is Minoxidil, which is a topical solution approved in 1988. Minoxidil has been proven in some cases to help stop or slow down hair loss on the vertex (crown) of the head.
However, this solution has shown little effect on frontal hair loss, meaning the temples or hair line. The temples and hair line are where many men begin to recede and have great concern.
Minoxidil must be taken on a daily basis to be effective. Any gains will be lost if treatment stops.
In 1997 the FDA approved a prescription drug for men only, for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (androgenitic alopecia). Propecia® effectively helps hair loss to stop by reducing the formation of dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT causes hair follicles to close off slowly. Over time, hairs become miniaturized and eventually fall out causing male pattern baldness.
Hair on the sides and back of the head are resistant to this hormone, ergo the transplant of these follicles in permanent hair restoration.
Propecia® will help to maintain the hair you have but will not bring back hair that has already been lost. Propecia® is taken daily with results being a slow process of up to 12 months.

Bosley LaserComb
The only drug-free treatment for hair loss accepted by the FDA is the Bosley LaserComb. This latest innovation uses 9 individual laser beams with just the right amount of energy to help promote growth and stimulate hair follicles.
The process is simple, apply to thinning areas for 10-15 minutes, three times per week.
The Bosley LaserComb is not ideal for advanced hair loss. However, it may be used with pre-operative and post-operative patients after a permanent hair restoration procedure.
Why Hair Transplantation Works as a Permanent Solution to Hair Loss
The only permanent solution to hair loss is a permanent hair restoration procedure. Simply stated, hair restoration involves the transplanting of hair and follicles from the sides and back of the head. These follicles are resistant to the hormone DHT, effectively establishing the “donor area”. These hairs and follicles are artfully moved to the thinning areas at the front and top of the head.
The hair follicle itself is resistant to DHT and will retain this resistance when moved, thriving where genetically sensitive hair failed.
