Hair Loss > FDA Approved Solutions > Bosley Medical

Hair can fall out for a variety of reasons, but for men, the primary cause is dihydrotestosterone (DHT).  This hormone combined with genetics determines if and when your hair will start to thin.

DHT causes the hair follicles to close off slowly.  Over time, hairs become miniaturized and eventually fall out causing male pattern baldness (androgenitic alopecia)

You’ve probably noticed in many men, even those with significant hair loss, that the hair on the sides and back of the head remains. This hair is resistant to DHT.

For hair that is sensitive to DHT, there are FDA approved solutions.

Propecia® is a drug prescribed to men only that was approved by the FDA in 1997.  Propecia® effectively reduces the formation of DHT helping hair loss to stop.  Propecia® will not bring back the hair you’ve already lost but will help to maintain the hair you have.  Results from Propecia® are a slow process and can take up to 12 months when taken daily.

The latest innovation approved by the FDA is the Bosley LaserComb®.  It’s also the only drug-free treatment for male pattern baldness.  The Bosley LaserComb® uses nine individual laser beams with just the right amount of energy to help stimulate hair follicles and promote growth.

This hand-held device is applied to thinning areas for 10-15 minutes three times per week.

The Bosley LaserComb® is not ideal for advanced hair loss but may be used with pre-operative and post-operative patients after a permanent hair restoration procedure.

In 1988, the FDA approved the topical solution, Minoxidil, to treat hair loss.  Minoxidil is the most common treatment for hair loss and has been proven in some cases to slow down or help stop hair loss on the vertex of the head.

Minoxidil has demonstrated little effect on frontal hair loss, the hair line or temples, where many men begin to recede and have the greatest concern.

To be effective, Minoxidil must be applied on a daily basis.  If treatment stops, the results gained will be lost.
