Hair Loss Solutions
There are many hair loss solutions on the market however, very few have been proven and only two are approved and endorsed by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
In this article we’ll discuss Propecia®, one of the two solutions approved by the FDA.
It was 1997 when Propecia® (finasteride 1mg.) was approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness. Propecia® is best used in men with early stage hair loss. This prescription drug is for men only.
Clinical trials have shown that 83% of men increased or maintained their hair count while 66% had a visible increase in their scalp hair. This information is provided by the manufacturer, Merck.
Propecia® is fantastic for men wanting to maintain the hair they currently have but only 5% will find this solution to be satisfactory to re-grow a significant amount of hair.
One of the most common questions asked regarding Propecia® is whether or not it is necessary after a permanent hair restoration procedure at Bosley. It’s important to note that transplanted hair (read our series on this permanent restoration procedure) is not affected by DHT, the primary cause of hair loss. For this reason using Propecia® along with a hair restoration procedure will depend on the amount of remaining native hair at the time of the procedure.
For those with significant remaining native hair, Propecia® is often strongly recommended as part of the treatment plan.
Common questions regarding Propecia®
How does Propecia® work?
Scientists have discovered that one of the principle reasons for male pattern hair loss is a hormone called DHT (dihydrotesterone). Propecia® effectively inhibits the formation of DHT. Most men will see a slowing or cessation of hair loss on the top of the head and scalp.
How quickly does Propecia® work?
This is a slow process where you must dedicate at least 12 months to see results. Merck has stated that Propecia® must be taken consistently or any hair grown or maintained will be lost within 12 months.
Are there sexual side effects?
Lower libido is reported in only 1.8% of men taking Propecia® compared with 1.3% in the placebo group. According to the manufacturer, Merck, the side effects always went away in those who stopped taking Propecia® and in most men who continued with the prescription.
Bosley’s hair transplantation is still the preferred method as a permanent solution to hair loss however; your physician may prescribe Propecia® as part of your treatment program.
Bosley patients always receive special pricing and promotional rebates.
If you have further questions regarding Propecia® and how it can be best used as part of your permanent hair restoration program, be sure to talk with a Bosley physician. If you have already been prescribed Propecia® by another non-Bosley M.D. and would like a refill you can fax to the following:
