Bosley Multi-Part Series on Hair Loss

Welcome to our multi-part series on hair loss and hair loss solutions.  We’ll visit many aspects of hair loss, hear stories of those who have changed their lives with hair restoration, learn what’s myth and what actually works and hear more about advancements in preventing hair loss and new procedures to restore your hair.

Bulletin #1: Male pattern baldness what causes it and what you can do now to make a difference in how you look and feel.

Hair loss affects many of us, male and female, at any age and for many reasons though the onset is typically in the adult years and affects more men than women. In this article we’ll discuss one of the primary causes of hair loss as well as introduce the most popular and permanent hair restoration solution.

Hair loss is caused by a variety of factors from stress to how we care for our hair but the largest impact comes from a little known hormone called DHT.

This article is not intended to be a technical article on DHT (we’ll get to that one later) but rather a general information piece that will provide you with information to begin researching your hair loss and the best solution to get it back.

DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is a natural metabolite of the human body that is the primary reason for hair loss. In simple terms DHT starves hair by restricting proteins, vitamins and minerals.

When your hair has limited access to proteins, vitamins and minerals it effectively shrinks in diameter until it eventually falls out and the follicle closes permanently.

When a follicle has closed it cannot be re-opened. However, a follicle that has closed is not the same as a follicle that has been blocked. A blocked follicle can be cleared of its obstructions with proper care. We’ll discuss later in this series how to care for your hair properly.

If you’ve reached the point in your hair loss where other preventative methods will no longer have an effect then hair restoration could be the best solution.

This is something you can discuss with the assistance of a trained professional. It’s best to visit a senior counselor in your area to better understand hair loss, causes of hair loss and treatment options. After meeting with a senior counselor you’ll be able to further discuss your candidacy for treatment options with a Bosley physician.

Hair restoration (hair transplant procedure) is a relatively simple process that uses local anesthetic and is done at a surgical office close to you. These procedures typically last from ½-1 full day depending on the number of grafts decided on for the restoration.

The number of grafts decided on depends on a variety of factors, which will be discussed between you and the doctor.

A graft is also commonly referred to as a follicular unit. Grafts are typically made up of groupings of between 1 and 4 hairs.

If you look at your own hairline or even at the hair on your arm you’ll notice the variety in these groupings. These groupings and how they are eventually placed have an enormous impact on how natural your hairline will look.

A natural hairline is defined as one that is virtually undetectable and looks completely natural. A skilled, experienced and artistic surgeon has the ability to bring your appearance back to a place you likely never thought it would be again.

Times have changed, hair transplant surgery has changed and naturalness is now the rule. (Later in this series we’ll also discuss the evolution of hair transplant surgery and even take a look at what’s on the horizon).

Hair at the front of a hairline is somewhat finer with smaller groupings then as you move back you’ll notice that hair becomes thicker with larger groupings. This is completely natural but also a vital piece when artistically re-designing your hairline.

Your surgeon is not only board certified or has equivalent credentials but also has a minimum of 10 years experience in hair restoration. It’s this extensive experience that leads to an incredible eye for proper hair restoration, an understanding of the rules of facial dimensions and placement of these follicular units, which is affected by the color and density of your hair, your stage of hair loss, your facial structure and a variety of other factors.

At this point maybe you’ve come to the conclusion that preventative methods will no longer have an effect on your hair and maybe it’s time to see a senior counselor to get a better assessment and learn more on hair loss and treatment options.

Consultations are always free and are extremely informative but if you’re not ready for a consultation yet? Read on!

In the next part of this series we’ll talk in detail about how hair transplant procedures work, the process and how long it takes to have your full head of hair restored.
